PROPER PLACE FOR HARRY

HARRY TRUMAN AS SEEN BY "DADDY"'S EYE!

I HAVE FINALLY, AFTER MANY YEARS, FOUND A WONDERFUL WAY TO DISPLAY DADDY'S CARICATURE  OF HARRY TRUMAN.   IT WAS SECURELY PACKED IN A DRAWER UNTIL A WEEK AGO.  DISPLAYING THIS TREASURE, IN THIS FASHION, JUST CAME TO ME....LIKE MOST OF MY EPIPHANIES.

DURING DADDY'S LIFE, HE SKETCHED  THE PRESIDENTS FROM COOLIDGE THROUGH NIXON ......PLUS MANY OTHERS,  INCLUDING EINSTEIN, KIPLING. GEORGE BERNARD SHAW......  MOST SIGNED!!!! SOME IN PERSON.....

HIS COLLECTION IS NOW SPREAD AMONG THE "FAMILY"  I HAD THE "PRESIDENT" COLLECTION FOR YEARS.  RECENTLY, I GIFTED THEM TO THE "KIDS", BUT KEPT HARRY TRUMAN.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION EXPERIENCES WAS HIS HARRY TRUMAN MEETING!

HARRY TRUMAN'S SIGNATURE WAS OBTAINED ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN NEW YORK CITY.  DADDY KNEW TRUMAN TOOK MORNING WALKS WHILE IN THE CITY AND DECIDED TO TRY HIS LUCK.  HE TOOK MY BROTHER BOBBY WITH HIM FOR "SUPPORT".  THEY WAITED AT THE HOTEL ENTRANCE,  AND WHEN TRUMAN CAME THROUGH THE DOOR TO START HIS WALK, DADDY AND BOBBY (WITH THE CARICATURE IN HAND) BEGAN TO FOLLOW THE ENTOURAGE.  THE SECRET SERVICE IMMEDIATELY  APPROACHED THEM.  DADDY EXPLAINED WHAT HE WAS HOPING TO ACCOMPLISH.  THE SECRET SERVICE WERE OK WITH DADDY AND BOBBY AND  THEY WERE ALLOWED TO MEET TRUMAN, WHO GRACIOUSLY SIGNED THE PIECE.

HE HAD AN " ENCOUNTER"  WITH CHARLES LINDBERGH, IN A MEN'S ROOM,  WHO WAS ONE OF THE FEW WHO REFUSED TO SIGN THE PIECE!

  5. If 'truth be told,' I wasn't much support that day. I remember waiting with dad for Mr. Truman to come down for his morning walk. When the elevator doors opened and Mr. Truman exited, he was surrounded by two or three of the largest men I had ever seen. When daddy approached, the secret service did surround dad but I, fearing for his well being (and mine) froze and hid behind a chair in the lobby... not much support or my proudest moment.

  6. Your honest recount of the day is eye opening! Daddy never related it that way. He always said you gave him the courage to precede! I would love to have seen the entire scene!
