MC TO THE RESCUE!

Last year we replaced the typical builder light fixtures in our Master Bath.  I was able to convince MC to order ,  two,  "hanging" lights.  I wanted the "light" to be at face height, not coming from above.  We couldn't install sconces,  so I came up with the brilliant "Epiphany" to order chain lamps!  and they were very inexpensive.....no surprise why!

The shape and function was acceptable, but every time I entered the room,  all I saw was shinny, gold, chain lamps from 1970!  I figured they would grow on me.  Wrong, they  never did.  I thought I had made a big mistake, and then I had one of my "Epiphanies"

I could use Rub and Buff and tone down the 1970 "shine"!  I tried, I really did.  The Rub and Buff slid all over the place.  I learned it simply didn't adhere to  glossy,  lacquered finishes!  I made them worse.  Not to mention what it did to the psoriasis outbreak on my hands.....(another story, for another time and place)

The end result was an uneven disaster!.  Not only impossible to keep the stuff "in place" but it  left hunks of "Rub and Buff" all over the fixtures!  These photos don't really show how bad it really looked............A BIG MESS.  I'd put it up there with the one of the Top 10 Mistakes!

What to do?

I did what I always do.

WENT TO MC

Like "MIGHTY MOUSE"

MC.... "CAME TO THE RESCUE"

He went to his favorite place, you all know, Lowes, and bought a can of antique gold spray paint.
Then he set up his Paint Box!
Then hung the chain lamp, one at a time!  And spray painted them to perfection!

This morning, MC, Master Crafter rehung the lamps!

The Master Bath is no longer in the 1970's
Thanks to MC we are in 2012!!

  2. The man is a genius!! I love the "paint box" station. We usually take things outside to spray, and hope it is not windy. Gotta remember this paint box. Looks great, Patty :)

  5. Linda, the rub n buff was a mess. Usually I have great success. I think the secret is the "material".

  6. Mighty Mouse to the rescue! Great result Patty. They look great. As a just learning DIY-er, it helps to know other folks have little hiccups!

  7. I have a light fitting in my daughter's room I have wanted to paint but didn't know how to do it with spray without doing the whole room by accident. That box idea is brilliant. Now I know!

  9. Mighty Mouse and his theme song lyrics of "here I come to save the day".....lol. That sure applies to MC.

I think Rub n Buff is fine for small objects such as knobs otherwise your best bet is a can of spray paint as the "Wise One" MC has done. I love how they look now and I'm a huge fan of your artwork. How is the picture attached to the mirror?

  10. Naz, We have hung art and mirrors "over" large mirrors for years! MC devised a way using fishing line! Easy, inexpensive and IT WORKS!

  11. Three cheers for MC!! They look fabulous now!! I've had so many project "fails" like that, so I know how great it feels when a solution is found and the fail turns to success! I love how they look hung low over the mirror like that. Very nice!!

  12. Love MC! Such a great post...the moral of the story is to hang (pun intended)in there! (and have a super handy husband around too!)

  14. Excellent! I have always been suspicious of Rub n'buff. Did you have to remove the R & B first?

  15. Didn't remove the rub and buff. Let it dry and then MC spray painted right over it. Worked like magic.

  16. i love how crafty and messy you are getting!

  17. Real messy! It was "***" getting that stuff off my hands. Had to use a very strong cleanser that killed my skin! I'm not one to take advise and use "gloves"!

  19. I had the same RnB problems! Spray paint is so much easier, but then I tried Rub n Buff on plastic and it went on perfect! It looks great.

  20. Nancy, it depends on the texture of what you work with. I have always had great success. This is my first flop!

  21. Ouch. No fun with that rub n buff, thank heavens for MC and yes, that Mighty Mouse photo should be his profile pic. Hilarious but he so does always come to your rescue.

  23. I have had the same issue with rub and buff on occasion! I do love the way they turned out!

  24. I love those light fixtures! I tried to use rub and buff on some lamps I found for the shelter. The bottom was brass and it did a little sliding around so lucky for me it was a small area. I just kind of patted it on. I DID NOT have MC to come to my rescue!
